Privacy policy

Effective
October 12, 2026

This policy explains what personal information Strange Hat Studios collects through this website, why, who else handles it, how long we keep it, and the rights you have over it.

Who we are

This website is run by Simon Aytes, trading as Strange Hat Studios (“Strange Hat Studios”, “we”, “us”). We are the controller of the personal information described here. For any privacy question or request, email legal@strangehatstudios.com.

What we collect and why

When you visit the site. Our hosting provider automatically records server logs: your IP address, browser details, the pages you requested, the referring page and the time. IP addresses are personal information. We use these logs only to run the site, keep it secure and fix problems. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in operating a secure website. Netlify also uses your IP address to limit how often our forms can be submitted.

When you sign up for the newsletter. We collect your email address, together with the page you signed up on and the time, as a record of your consent. We use it only to send you news about our studio and games. Our legal basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by using the unsubscribe link in any email or by emailing us.

When you send a press or demo key request. We collect your name, outlet or channel, email address and any notes you include. We use them only to reply to your request and, if we agree, to send you keys or materials. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in responding to people who contact us.

We do not use this information for advertising, we do not sell it, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.

Who handles it for us

We use these service providers (processors), who handle personal information only on our instructions:

  • Netlify, which hosts the website and keeps its server logs.
  • Formspark, which stores newsletter sign-ups and press requests and emails them to us.
  • Cloudflare, if our forms show a Cloudflare Turnstile check, which uses information about your browser and connection to tell people from bots.

Some of these providers may process information outside your country, including in the United States. Where the law requires it, these transfers are covered by appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.

How long we keep it

  • Server logs: up to 30 days, unless needed longer to investigate a security problem.
  • Newsletter sign-ups: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them.
  • Press and demo key requests: up to 2 years after our last exchange with you.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, including under the EU and UK GDPR and California law (CCPA/CPRA), you have the right to:

  • access the personal information we hold about you, and get a copy in a portable format;
  • correct it if it is wrong;
  • have it deleted;
  • object to or restrict how we use it;
  • withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting what we did before you withdrew it;
  • not be treated differently for using any of these rights.

To use any of these rights, email legal@strangehatstudios.com. We will reply within one month. If you are in the EU or UK and are unhappy with how we handle your information, you can complain to your local data protection authority.

Cookies

This website does not set cookies or use similar tracking technologies. If we add any that are not strictly necessary, we will ask for your consent first and update this policy.

Children

This website is not directed at children under 13, and the newsletter is not for anyone under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us their information, email us and we will delete it.

This website links to other sites, such as our social media pages and our press kit. Their own privacy policies apply when you visit them.

Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your personal information, including encrypted connections and limiting who can access it. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. The effective date at the top shows when it last changed. If we make a material change, we will post a notice on this website, and email newsletter subscribers where the change affects them.
